Remembering Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla (1961-2003) was an Indian-American astronaut and the first woman of Indian origin to travel to space. She was born in Karnal, India, and moved to the United States in 1982 to pursue her studies in aeronautical engineering.

Chawla joined NASA in 1995 and flew her first space mission in 1997 as part of the six-member crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia. She later flew on a second mission in 2003, again aboard the Columbia. Tragically, the spacecraft disintegrated during re-entry, killing Chawla and the rest of the crew.
